PROTEIN POWDER
What is whey protein? Whey protein is a high quality protein extracted from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids. Amino acids are needed daily by the body so it can function correctly. Whey protein is an excellent protein choice for individuals of all ages. It provides many benefits in areas including sports nutrition, weight management, immune support, bone health, and general wellbeing. It is not a well known fact that we can actually live without carbohydrates but we cannot survive without protein. The two best forms of whey protein that are mainly used are Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) and Whey Protein Isolate (WPI).
Whey Protein is excellent for individuals of all ages who wish to maintain or improve their health and for those exerting themselves in sporting activities it is essential. Some of the advantages for different needs are mentioned below:
Diabetes (the scourge of modern living)
Type 2 diabetes is a major health problem and is growing daily due to the obesity epidemic that is hitting our society. In no way is it unique to the adult population but is now prolific in children and the teenage population. Good healthy nutrition can help change this type 2 diabetes epidemic. A high quality WPC is a good choice for diabetics who need to take care of their food intake as it has been shown to be beneficial in controlling blood glucose levels. It is also a helpful in weight management.
Aging
As we age, we lose our muscle tone which can cause many other negative health effects. The taking of adequate whey protein as part of our daily nutrition may help maintain muscle tone especially when taken in conjunction with a cardio-exercise and weight/resistance training. It is also has the added benefit of having the ability of preventing bone loss if taken consistently. A diet that includes whey protein may help keep bones and the muscle groups strong and healthy and assist with keeping or attaining a healthy immune system.
Weight Management
By keeping a healthy body weight you can add to the quality of life both at a young age and especially as one gets older. It can add years to ones life expectancy by helping us stay clear of weight related complications such as heart disease, diabetes and other more insidious diseases.
How does whey protein assist in weight loss? Here are some of the reasons:
- WP requires more energy to digest than carbohydrates and thus burns more calories trying to digest after a protein meal.
- WP contains a good supply of the amino acid, leucine, which helps improve body composition by preserving lean muscle tissue while promoting fat loss. Whey Protein contains more leucine than milk, egg or soy protein.
- WP assists in stabilising blood glucose levels by slowing the absorption of glucose (sugars) into the bloodstream. This helps with keeping hunger in check by lowering insulin levels and making it easier to burn body fat.
- WP contains two bioactive components that aide the release of the appetite suppressing hormones cholecystokinin (CCK) and glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1). Taking a high WP intake can help many people restrict food intake as protein has a satiating effect.
Sporting Endeavours including weight training
Whey protein is a high quality, complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids required by an athlete. It is the richest source of naturally occurring branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). These are important for active sports people and essential for the professional athletes. The body requires larger amounts of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) during and following exercise as they are utilised directly by the skeletal muscles compared to the other amino acids that are metabolised firstly through the liver. Low BCAA's can lead to fatigue and should be replaced within the first 10-20 minutes of completing an exercise or participation in a competitive event and definitely no later than one hour. It is also often wise to take in protein within an hour of starting exercise.
For recreational or more serious gym goers, the evidence supports a daily protein intake in the range of 1.5 to 2 grams per pound of bodyweight is overwhelming. For an example a person weighing 79kg (175 pounds), would initially aim for a daily intake of around 300 grams of quality protein. (this includes protein from your normal food intake). You can later adjust this amount up or down as your goals dictate. To reach this level each meal should be focused around hearty portions of your favourite high protein foods like steak and other beef cuts, fish and seafood, chicken, eggs, pork, soy tofu etc.
We reiterate the following information:
Post-workout protein intake is crucial. After a hard workout the stimulus caused by this workout is high and what is called the "golden window" opens. The ideal period for maximum uptake is the first 10-20 minutes after finishing exercise. During this period, your muscle cells, quite literally, open up fully for a short time looking to soak up protein like a sponge does water. In order to take full advantage of this opportunity to greatly accelerate the growth and repair of your muscle tissue a high quality, quickly assimilated protein powder should be taken. High protein foods are not suitable as they do not digest fast enough.
We recommend for everyone up-to and including competitive athletes O2b Healthy range of Whey Protein "OUR WHEY" or for the competitive weight lifters who require large amounts of protein and added amino acids the NFS SUPER WHEY PROTEIN.
