How to lose weight and keep it off long term
Excess body fat is simply excess consumed food that the body has ended up storing as fat over the years.
The trick is to get your body to start using those stores as energy. Simply not eating does not work because the body is far more complex than that.
Your body ultimately is about survival. In prehistoric times the human body would store excess fat as reserves of energy to be used in times of a famine. When the food was there the body would add an extra margin in for future needs. During a famine (not eating or eating less) the body would become extremely efficient with what ever it got by slowing down the body's metabolic rate.
If you cut back on your food in take your body will fight to hold on to every bit of stored energy it has because it does not know how long this 'famine' will last for. Once the 'famine' stops it will add extra stores so it can ensure you have a greater chance of 'surviving' the next shortage.
This is why a lot of diets appear to work initially, but long term the body bounces back and adds yet more weight!
The keys to fat loss are:
* Use more energy through exercising regularly
* Weight train to build lean muscle tissue.
More muscle requires more calories to maintain.
* Eat smaller meals more often through-out the day (4-6).
This keeps your metabolic elevated throughout the day.
* Avoid fast release carbohydrates as much as possible
Sugars (high dextrose equivalent (DE) foods) cause an insulin rise. Excess insulin is often dealt with by the body by being stored as body fat
* Eat higher levels of protein throughout the day (especially before and after training)
You want to supply the building blocks for building lean muscle tissue. Protein also helps keep insulin levels stable. Eat 2-3 grams per kg per day. A helping of meat the size of your fist 4-6 times per day
* Reduce fat levels in your diet.
Try and avoid pork, bacon, sausages and fatty fried foods. Supplement Flax Seed Oil into your diet (essential fatty acids). At least 15mls per day.
* Reduce your complex carbohydrate intake especially after 7pm at night.
Complex carbohydrates are high concentrations of carbon, which is the body's preferred source of energy. These include potatoes, bread, rice, and pasta. If you are supplying an excess of what your body requires, your body will either store some of it as body fat or discard it as human waste.
If you are eating often, but less of this form of food, you are forcing your body to look elsewhere for its energy needs. If you can, train first thing in the morning. This will ensure your metabolism is kept elevated all day long and this combined with not eating after 7pm at night and only eating after you exercising in the morning, will help trick your body into using more fat stores as energy.
