Decisions, decisions....how can you get the best value for your money when deciding to make a healthy and permanent change in your diet and life-style? One of the cheapest and healthiest options when totting up your fluid intake schedule is the addition of green tea (Camellia sinensis).
To help you make an informed choice there are several good books on green tea available from shops and libraries, but the one to beat all is called The Green Tea Book: China's Fountain of Youth by Mitscher & Dolby (1998)
The authors have researched current scientific literature, and discovered that since a Chinese Emperor first recorded his use of green tea more than 4,000 years ago - green tea has been prized as a tonic for keeping the body in top condition.
More recent and exciting research links green tea with the prevention of cancer, and with the modification of side effects from cancer therapies like radiation and chemotherapy. The Green Tea Book backs up these encouraging claims with facts, figures, and a full bibliography of research reports from around the world.
The drinking of green tea is backed up by scientific studies, showing that Camellia sinensis of all kinds, but especially green tea , increases the body's resistance to cardiovascular disease, and increases the body's defence against common viruses like colds and flu. Drinking green tea de-toxifies the body, prevents dental cavities, encourages vibrant skin, and lengthens life span.
All teas are derived from the plants Camellia sinensis and Camellia assamica, and their category of " grean " or "black" comes from the degree of processing that the Camellia sinensis leaves are subjected to.
It seems that there are several potent factors in green tea that nourish and revitalise body and mind, but the most important category is the high incidence of phytonutrients. These are naturally occurring compounds found in plants, and so they protect us naturally against disease and degeneration. They are present in all teas - but are especially high in green tea because of its minimal processing.
There are a huge number of phytonutrients, and scientists divide them up into several smaller classes for ease of discussion and research. One these classes is the polyphenols - present in Camellia sinensis , apples, onions, red wine and other foods. Polyphenols are best known for their antioxidant properties.
The presence of antioxidant polyphenols is particularly high, and indicates you are assured of their free-radical-scavenging and antibacterial effects if you include regular drinks of green tea in your daily diet.
You don't even have to use whole -bags. Just drop a pinch of the leaves into a cup of boiling water, and when the leaves have dropped to the bottom of the cup, and the pale emerald coloured liquid is cool enough to drink - enjoy!
You can add some honey if you wish, but never add milk, it neutralises the beneficial alkalising effect of the tea (and it spoils the taste).
In a week or two you will find that your health and digestion are improved, and you will have found a strong ally in your search for a healthy beverage in this polluted age.
