Active Constituents
-Licorice is soothing and softens mucus membranes of the throat, lungs, stomach, and intestines, and at the same time cleanses any inflamed mucus membrane that needs immune support. It is often found in cough syrups and throat medications for this reason, and works as an expectorant, by its saponins loosening the phlegm in the respiratory tract.
Licorice can aid in healing and restoring the adrenal glands, through its steroidal (cortisone-like substance) content.
Licorice helps regulate sodium retention and water balance, acts as a blood cleanser and detoxifier with benefits to the liver. It may help raise low blood pressure, (often associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), however, if you have high blood pressure, may aid in lowering it.
Licorice also displays this alterative action in hormonal balancing. If oestrogen levels are too high it will work to lower them, and if they are too low, it will work to raise them. This is thought to be due to its isoflavone content.
Licorice is also said to increase sexual desire, and be an aid in staying alert.
Licorice is an important tonic for the musculoskeletal system, also thought to harmonize the action of all other herbs when added to formulations.
-Bayberry is often used as a natural antibiotic, to strengthen and support the immune system in fighting viral and bacterial infections, such as, colds, flu's, gingivitis, mouth ulcers, tonsillitis, and for oral, intestinal, and vaginal thrush.
It is said to promote glandular activity and to normalize mucous activity. It is often used as a hormone balancer especially for women's reproductive organs.
It increases circulation, increases perspiration which can aid healing in some ailments, is a bitter and aromatic herb, and has an astringent action, so acts to contract tissues.
Bayberry has also been used for the thyroid, excessive or heavy menses, and vaginal discharge.
-Raspberry acts as an astringent to irritated skin or mucous membranes, tightening the top layers, and therefore effectively reducing secretions and relieving irritation, while improving tissue firmness. It acts as a toner for the uterus and is often used to ease painful menstrual cycles, and for other female related issues, it is even considered a useful herb to be drunk as a tea, and given to prepubescent girls as a way to ease their first menstrual cycle.
It is rich in minerals and vitamins, is said to enrich a mother's milk, and relieves nausea.
-Chamomile is well known, and often used for, its soothing and calming qualities, and is especially calming in cases of anxiety, and to the digestive system if there are upsets though anxiety.
It is considered a remedial tonic, and stimulates digestion and aids to expel unwanted gas from the stomach, intestinal system and bowels. It also aids in depressing feelings of nausea, and acts as a relaxant to the gastrointestinal tract.
If applied topically, has exhibited anti-inflammatory and antibiotic activity.
Research reports show that when used as a mouthwash or gargle, it can help in relieving methotrexate - induced oral mucositis in a patient with arthritis. Oral mucositis is a known side effect/complication of methotrexate therapy.
-Calendula is best known for its effectiveness in healing conditions of the skin - wounds, burns, insect bites, eczema and rashes.
Experimental research appears to show the use of Calendula is stimulating to the immune system, and promotes lymphatic drainage, reducing inflammation and associated pain. It is especially indicated for use in treatment of enlarged /inflamed lymph nodes. It also works to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and some indications of working to inhibit the growth of tumours.
Calendula stimulates the digestion, by increasing bile secretions, working as a cholagogue, and so indirectly aiding liver function.
Calendula contains lycopene, so is good for prostate health.
Calendula is considered anti-fungal, antiseptic and contains antimicrobial compounds that appear to work against the staphylococcus bacteria and also against Candida.
Its wound healing properties are attributed to high levels of natural iodine, carotene and manganese which promotes skin cell regeneration. Calendula is considered to be both astringent in nature and styptic, which contract the tissues like an astringent but tend to stop the bleeding.
-Myrrh was one of the three gifts given to Jesus by the three kings and it has since then been a highly regarded herb. It is the resin of a tree which grows in North Africa and the Middle East. Folk medicine used Myrrh as incense, perfume and as a preservative for the dead. Other uses were for muscular pain and rheumatic conditions. The Chinese use Myrrh for blood purifying and wound healing.
It is antimicrobial and anti-fungal, achieving antimicrobial action by stimulating production of white blood corpuscles.
