Active Constituents
Wild Yam has been used by herbalists since the 18th and 19th centuries for treatment in problems relating to childbirth, alleviating labour pains, menstrual cramping, endometriosis, general muscle cramps, stomach upsets, digestive problems and coughs, as well as rheumatic conditions and arthritis. It is also good for the liver, which it tones and nourishes, and for the endocrine system.
Wild Yam contains a substance called diosgenin, which has similar effects as that of progesterone, and so is used to treat premenstrual symptoms, or PMS. Progesterone acts as a "buffer" against the negative effects of elevated estrogen levels. As a woman goes through her menstrual cycle, her hormones fluctuate, when progesterone levels drop - estrogen levels rise, and symptoms associated with PMS are more likely to be asserted. Wild yam also works to diminish menopausal symptoms of vaginal dryness and hot flushes.
Diosgenin also appears to block the body's absorption of cholesterol, although studies are inconclusive and more research is underway, it so far appears to be lowering the triglyceride levels. It also stimulates the flow of bile, lowers blood pressure and dilates blood vessels, reducing stress and therefore has an indirect benefit to the liver and heart.
Black Cohosh is known primarily as a woman's herb, having a special affinity to menopausal women. It assists with the symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, and for depression associated with menopause.
Black Cohosh is used as an alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy(HRT), and is being used in that capacity more, especially useful to some women where HRT is contraindicated through various disorders.
Most menopausal women who use black cohosh, note reduction of symptoms in 4-8 weeks, including hot flushes, headaches, heart palpitations, vertigo, nervousness, irritability and excessive sweating. This is thought to be due to its effect within the pituitary gland, by normalizing the secretion of luteinizing hormone, which the symptoms of menopause are attributed to when at elevated levels.
Black Cohosh also acts as a nervine, an agent which works on the nervous system to relax the body. There is also a component of salicylic acid, so not also good for muscle cramps, but also as an analgesic for pain and headaches. Anti-inflammatory properties are also present.
Fenugreek was used historically by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, as both a culinary herb and medicinally for menopausal symptoms, inducing childbirth, and for digestive problems. Traditional Chinese herbalists used it for kidney problems and conditions affecting the male reproductive tract. It is now also used for loss of appetite, to stimulate milk production, and for diabetes. It is considered a carminative (expels gas from stomach, intestinal system or bowels), a demulcent (relieves internal inflammation and provides a protective coating to allay irritation of the membrane tissue), a stomachic ( gives strength and tone to the abdominal area and stimulates appetite which helps in digestive problems), an expectorant and mild laxative.
Fenugreek contains an estrogen precursor called Diosgenin.
It has a history as a breast enlarger. Studies have found that fenugreek promotes the growth of new breast cells, so increases size and fullness of the breast.
Fenugreek is also a moderately effective galactagogue (promotes secretion of milk in lactating mothers). Some lactation consultants recommend mothers ingest fenugreek in quantities until their skin exudes a smell similar to that of maple syrup. Fenugreek is often used in the food industry as artificial maple syrup flavouring.
Fenugreek is a good source of protein, and the seeds contain hormone precursors that replenish hair growth, so has benefits in hair loss, balding and thinning of hair. It contains lecithin, which is a natural emollient known to strengthen and moisturise hair.
Contains choline which aids brain functioning.
Fenugreek has been the focus of many studies for diabetes, as it also contains amino acid 4-hydroxyisoluecine, which appears to increase the body's production of insulin when blood sugar levels are elevated. Higher insulin production may decrease the amounts of sugar that stay in the blood, for many people.
True Unicorn was used by Native Americans for stimulating digestion and to induce menstruation. Nowadays, it is used mainly for gynaecological problems, particularly during menopause, for menstruation pain, and irregular periods, and is considered a uterine tonic.
It is also called a stomachic which strengthens and tones the abdominal area, and stimulates appetite which helps digestive problems.
Vitex has been recognized as having medicinal qualities since before the times of Hippocrates in AD460. Early doctors noted its effects on the female reproductive system. It is also called Chasteberry and Monk's Pepper, as monks used the plant to lessen their libido, believing it to be anaphrodisiac, as an aid to remain celibate, this may have been due to its androgen reducing effects.
Vitex causes the pituitary gland to decrease production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and increases the production of luteinizing hormone (LH). The hormonal shift leads indirectly to higher progesterone levels and a decrease of male hormones, or androgens, in the body.
Women who experience abnormal hair growth, which is linked to high levels of androgens and FSH, may benefit from vitex, so to would those with serious hormonal acne.
Vitex helps regulate levels of prolactin, a hormone of the pituitary gland that stimulates milk production in lactating women, and has been linked to breast tenderness in the premenstrual phase. It also helps in the reduction of other symptoms, such as pre-cycle bloating, cramping, increase or decrease the flow as needed, for menopausal symptoms of hot flushes, and vaginal dryness as well.
